Description

John McArthur junior was the acting storekeeper at Victoria, Port Essington from 1842 until the settlement was abandoned in 1849. He was the son of Captain John McArthur, RM (Royal Marines), Commandant of the Port Essington settlement. The McArthur family (father and two sons, John and James) arrived with the original expedition in 1838. James H McArthur, was the first acting storekeeper for the settlement from 1838 until he left for Sydney in 1841. John McArthur junior returned to England in November 1849.
